Agriculture

Abundant farmlands provide Ulster communities with access to fresh local food and economic diversity, preserve the County’s heritage and offer a beautiful landscape for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Orchards, vineyards, cornfields and pastures of grazing livestock help define Ulster County’s unique sense of place.

According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, Ulster County’s average total income from farm-related sources (gross before taxes and expenses) per farm is $21,459 as compared to the State’s $18,061. Ulster County is ranked third Statewide in fruits, tree-nuts, berries, apples and sweet corn production. On a national level, Ulster County is ranked 15th overall for apple production.

Agri-tourism flourishes as families travel in increasing numbers to visit pick-your-own farms, farm stands, hayrides, corn mazes, harvest festivals and wine trails.

With the support of organizations such as the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County, Rondout Valley Growers Association, The Ulster County Farm Bureau, Hudson Valley Agri-Business Development Corp and the Hudson Valley Farm Hub, Ulster County is continually working to keep our agricultural heritage green.
