The Reconstructed Bridge Was Completed Ahead Of Schedule And Under Budget
Kingston, NY – Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announces that Sauer Bridge also known as PVI Bridge (Glasco Turnpike), a critical thoroughfare over the Esopus Creek in Saugerties that connects 9W to Mount Marion, has been reconstructed and is now open for all motorists to safely travel.
“I am pleased to announce that the PVI Bridge is now open and that construction has been completed ahead of schedule and under budget,” said County Executive Hein. “This bridge was originally scheduled by the State for repair in 2019 but it was quickly deteriorating. As the head of the Ulster County Transportation Council, I am pleased we were able to reprioritize this bridge and quickly complete this massive overhaul. Now, residents and visitors alike have safe access across this well-traveled bridge.”
Greg Helsmoortel, Town of Saugerties Supervisor
“I am certain I join the residents of Saugerties in saying how pleased we are that the County has been able to repair the bridge and have it open long before Thanksgiving as originally projected,” said Town of Saugerties Supervisor Greg Helsmoortel. “I appreciate County Executive Hein making this bridge a priority and delivering a safe thoroughfare for the people of Saugerties.”
Dean Fabiano, Ulster County Legislator/Chairman of the Public Works and Capital Projects Committee
“I am pleased that the Sauer Bridge has had a major overhaul and is now safe for travelers,” said Dean Fabiano, Ulster County Legislator and Chairman of the Public Works and Capital Projects Committee. “The safety of the public was worth the inconvenience of having the bridge closed for those months and I am glad that County Executive Hein made sure the job got done right.”
Peter Loughran, Ulster County Legislator/Deputy Chairman of the Public Works and Capital Projects Committee
“Sauer Bridge is now a refurbished and safe bridge and I appreciate County Executive Hein for expediting this project in order to minimize the public’s inconvenience,” said Peter Loughran, Ulster County Legislator and Deputy Chairman of the Public Works and Capital Projects Committee.
Chris Allen, Ulster County Legislator
“The bridge is opening up a few weeks ahead of schedule thanks to a fine job. I am glad that we now have a new bridge that people can safely travel around the area thanks to County Executive Hein, the Ulster County Department of Public Works, and the construction company,” said Ulster County Legislator Chris Allen.”
The Sauer Bridge was built in 1961, and after decades of wear and tear, heavy snowfalls and snowplowing, the bridge was deemed unsafe for travel. County Executive Hein included the Sauer Bridge repair in his Capital Improvement Program and in March 2013 Capital Project 385 was established to complete the repairs. This was after the County applied for funding from New York State under the Transportation Improvement Plan and was included on the project list for funding in 2018.
