The Proposed Closing Would Adversely Affect Delivery Of All Classes Of Mail As Well As Over 350 Current Employees

Kingston, NY — Today, Ulster County Executive Mike Hein filed a resolution with the Ulster County Legislature which urges Congressional intervention into the proposed closure of the United States Postal Service’s Mid-Hudson Processing and Distribution Center.  The facility employs over 350 individuals and is estimated to generate $33.5 million in labor income and $4.5 million in business income to the Mid-Hudson region.

“Today, I filed a resolution with the Ulster County Legislature which urges the United States Congress to intervene and prevent the closure of the postal Service processing facility in Newburgh,” said County Executive Hein. “I am asking the County Legislature to join me in opposing this closure which will have a tremendous financial impact on our region, and could also negatively affect the timely delivery of mail.  It is my hope that the Legislature acts quickly and passes this resolution in order to send a clear message to the federal government that action is needed now.”  

The closure of the Mid-Hudson Processing and Distribution Center is part of a larger cost-cutting effort by the Postal Service which proposes closing 82 Mail Processing and Distribution Centers across the country, which, should that occur, has the potential to greatly impact the timeliness of mail delivery and our entire region.
