MEDIA ADVISORY Ulster County Human Rights Commission Invites Community to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Posted December 5, 2023

KINGSTON, NY - The Ulster County Human Rights Department will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with a week-long schedule of community engagement events in Kingston and Ellenville.

Joe McDonald, Director of the Ulster County Human Rights Department stated, "Ask anyone, ‘what is a ‘human right?’ You may find that you get many different answers from many different people. In a nutshell, human rights are the rights we all have just because we are human. Human rights are the way we all wish to be treated.”

Eleanor Roosevelt, then Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, was instrumental in getting the Universal Declaration signed on December 10, 1948. The Declaration consists of 30 different articles of rights and is the most translated document in the world with over 550 translations.

Ulster County Human Rights Director Joe McDonald and members of the Human Rights Commission will meet with residents at the following dates, times, and locations between December 11-15:

  • Monday, December 11 from 12 PM to 2 PM in the lobby of the Ulster County Office Building (DMV), 244 Fair Street, Kingston
