There are two types of adult day care centers as defined by the New York State Department of Health: the medical model which provides medical monitoring, counseling, therapy and activities; and the social model, which provides socialization, supervision and activities. It offers respite to family members and caregivers, as well as providing a supervised setting when caregivers are at work or away during the day time. Within Ulster County, there is currently one medical model day care program (Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine) and one social model day care program (Valley Vista Adult Day Care Center in Highland).
